Designer and theorist Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc (1814– 79), a popular leader in the French Gothic Revival, was active in the repair of middle ages structures. In 1845 he carried out among the best jobs in the history of repair: the cleaning and repair of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris. For the next twenty-three years he labored at his job, returning the cathedral to its initial charm and appeal.
This volume is based upon a loyal recreation of the brought back mural paintings of the chapels, noteworthy for their creativity of style and the soft and subtle consistency of their coloring. The 60 full-page plates provide themselves to various graphic arts applications.
